The Kindergarten students at Northwest Elementary School embarked on a month long Project Based Learning (PBL) inquiry project called Thinking “Inside” the Box.

The goal of the project was to learn about the greater Manchester community in which they live and how community helpers are a vital part of our city. The students took a field trip (bus tour) of Manchester and saw many important buildings including; West High School, Catholic Medical Center, Fisher Cats Stadium and the Manchester Police Station. In addition, they stopped for tours at the Central Fire Station and the West Side Public Library, as it is important for students to learn from and talk with real community experts.

Then they chose a building that was meaningful to them and worked cooperatively as a team to make a model of that building using a box. They used writing and speaking skills to show how the buildings they modeled help our community. Students worked hard during this project to enrich their math, writing, reading, speaking and listening skills, art and science skills. They also learned to work cooperatively and collaborate with their teammates.

After the exhibition, projects were transferred to the Millyard Museum in Manchester for all members of the community to view and enjoy. The projects were on display until Sunday, March 10, 2019.

When the project was complete, members of the community including student families, local law enforcement, Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and Superintendent Dr. Bolgen Vargas came to Northwest where students presented their projects at a student-led exhibition. The students utilized conversation, self-reflection, peer assessment and peer critique during their project presentations.
